mekeo tendances

Cultural collective between Papua New Guinea and Switzerland

about mekeo
Tendances

Founded in Valais (Switzerland) in 2023, the Mekeo Tendances association aims to highlight the cultural heritage of Papua New Guinea, particularly the Mekeo tribe, through dance, music, and traditional arts.

Additionally, it seeks to promote intercultural exchange between Switzerland and Papua New Guinea.

Mekeo Tendances has set itself the challenge of making it possible for the Afaī cultural group to come to Europe in 2025 and to develop a cultural program centered around the Mekeo tribe.

claire martin collection

In 2016, Claire Martin donated her collection of 50 ritual headdresses to the Museum of Ethnography of Neuchâtel (MEN) in Switzerland. Often of exceptional quality, these headdresses bear witness to the unique connections that the groups in this region of the world maintain with their natural environment.

The variety of feathers used to create these items showcases an almost complete range of different species of "birds of paradise." Due to their fragility and the difficulty of collecting them, headdresses of this type are rarely represented or even completely absent from European ethnographic collections.

objectives

Preserve and transmit the traditions of the Papuans, particularly those of the Mekeo.

Promote the creative potential of the Mekeo.

Promote intercultural exchange between Papua New Guinea and Switzerland.
